Jon Mangiagli is a second-generation shaper and glasser, and the current owner of Mangiagli Surfboards. He operates out of his store, Cypress Surf Shop, just a few blocks from the water in Hermosa Beach, CA, right in the heart of the surfboard industry.
After an introduction from a Faherty family friend, Jon and his crew were gracious enough to invite some of our SoCal team over for a tour of the factory’s inner workings and a behind-the-scenes look at his family legacy.
The Cypress Street factory originally began as Rick Stoner’s “Rick Surfboards” retail and shaping facility. Jon’s father, Steve Mangiagli, was a laminator there and eventually purchased the factory in 1975 — before eventually passing it down to him in turn.
With over a decade of experience under his belt, Jon and his team create custom boards in a wide range of shapes and sizes, from classic logs to blazing fish to the unique pin-tail ripper. Every board is hand-shaped and glassed — they also laminate and repair boards for other brands.
The spot oozes vintage California surf vibes and local history, which is reflected in the work itself — lots of old-school heart meets modern performance and sensibilities. Interested in getting a Mangiagli board for yourself? Jon sells a few at our Venice store; swing by and take a look the next time you’re in the neighborhood...and in the meantime, you can follow along with his work @CypressSurfShop.
