Our travels have taken us to some amazing destinations around the world. But if we had to choose one place that most embodies the spirit of Faherty, hands down it would be Costa Rica. The country’s laidback beach culture, deep commitment to the environment, and pura vida (pura life) philosophy perfectly align with our brand mission. In many ways, it feels like a home away from home for us. Mike and Alex have been visiting since they were 10 years old. It was their very first trip outside of the U.S. Since then, they’ve regularly returned on surf getaways with friends and for unplugged family escapes. There’s a certain magic in the air there that makes it effortless to slow down the pace and embrace long days out in the water and low-key nights eating tacos under the stars.
In the 1980s, Costa Rica emerged as the global poster child for eco-tourism. Not one to rest on its laurels, it remains a leader in sustainable practices. One quarter of its land is set aside for national parks, refuges and reserves and approximately 30% of its marine area is preserved. Each time we visit, we marvel at Costa Rica’s natural wonders, from misty cloud forests and blacksand beaches to volcano-fed hot springs and vibrant coral reefs. Equally impressive is the local lifestyle. Consistently recognized as one of the happiest places on the planet, people there (known as ticos) measure success not with money or material goods, but quality of life.
Over the decades, we’ve been lucky enough to befriend some truly inspiring locals who receive us like family every time we return. Pura vida vibes fueled the inspiration for our 2025 summer collection, so it made sense to pack our bags (and surfboards), invite our closest friends, including Rockaway, N.Y.- based shaper Paul J. Schmidt (aka Paul Surf), and head to the beach town of Santa Teresa to shoot our newest looks. The surfer owners behind House of Somos rolled out the welcome carpet for us. Paul Surf went to work in the on-site shaping bay and crafted a board for local pro Tavo Rio. In exchange, Tavo showed us some of his favorite waves and après surf spots. The following pages capture our adventures and celebrate the dream of chasing an endless summer.
