The Getaway Issue: Sun Sessions in Santa Fe

Adventures 06.06.22

After a two-year, pandemic-enforced hiatus, we’re excited to announce that Sun Sessions are back.  Expanding my friendships over the years has been a tremendous source of growth and comfort, and New Mexico’s expansive landscape seemed like the perfect location to host our first Sun Session of the year. Seven friends—some new, others old—came together for a weekend of healing, mindfulness and meditation, nourishing meals, and conversations around mental health, race, nature, and art.

There’s something about New Mexico that opens your mind and spirit. It was the perfect destination for our girls getaway of seven friends who loved exploring the hiking trails, lakes and hot springs. As all of us are creators in our own way, it was easy to feel connected to the artists who have found inspiration in the desert for centuries. The slower pace and commitment to mindfulness and meaningful conversation helped us to see each other — and the world more deeply.

Ilea Dorsey Angaza, an energy healer and herbalist, led us in a heart opening cacao ceremony and guided meditation. Biologist and artist, Ash Baccus-Clark led a journaling session to take stock of our emotions. Nkechi Deanna Njaka is a neuroscientist and choreographer who encouraged us to dance and connect with the earth that she felt was “dense with wisdom, magic, spirit, and sacredness.”

And no gathering is complete without good food. We had some incredible meals in town at Southwest institutions like Sazón. But we also loved our alfresco happy hours in the courtyard of our Airbnb with seasonal grazing boards and cocktails mixed with Curamia, an all-female owned tequila operation committed to sustainability.

We spent our final day at Ojo Caliente, a hot spring oasis where we reflected on our days together in the restorative thermal waters. As Lindsay Branham, our friend and Emmy-nominated filmmaker said, “We all come from such different backgrounds but realized we were all holding different threads of one weave,” she said.
