Don’t get us wrong, we love long summer days. But there’s something about the first hint of fall that excites us. It brings a sense of new beginnings and gives us a reason to pull out our favorite cozy sweaters and super soft hoodies. Alex and Kerry’s daughter, Ava, age 6, (our favorite Faherty kids’ model) is giddy with anticipation to reunite with her friends and teachers at school. The bond she formed with her kindergarten teacher Maria Lopez, last year is one we’re sure will last a lifetime.
We view teachers like Maria as local heroes, which is why we wanted to dedicate this season’s book to the many teachers who have impacted and, in many instances, continue to influence our lives. We each have a teacher or coach we still fondly remember and credit for sparking a passion or boosting our confidence as kids. And throughout the years, we’ve continued to find guidance from new mentors.
Alex recalls important lessons on leadership from former high school football teammate Brian Flores, who has gone on to become a leader in his own right in the NFL. Kerry and Alex discovered a refreshing approach to spirituality through Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis, the senior minister at Middle Church who married them. And Doug Good Feather, of the Standing Rock Lakota and Dakota Nation, was one of our original Native collaborators, who continues to design with Mike and offer deep friendship. A teacher can be many things—a mentor, guide, educator, coach. Our fall book celebrates them all.
