Packaged With Care

Years ago, I was visiting my parents in South Carolina and took an early morning beach walk only to discover a dead sperm whale washed up on the shore. As the marine biologists arrived and inspected it, they shook their heads knowingly: hundreds of whales had been dying due to the consumption of plastic bags—bags that while floating in the ocean look conspicuously like jellyfish, the whale’s main food source. Faherty is deeply committed to reducing our plastic packaging and ensuring that no poly bags (flimsy, transparent bags found all too frequently at grocers and convenience stores) end up in the ocean. Since 2021 we’ve eliminated over 10 million plastic bags from our supply chain by using Vela bags, which are made from 100% FSC certified materials (Forest Stewardship Council sources paper from responsibly managed forests). They’re fully recyclable in most curbside recycling, and the use of them helps support Vela’s Sea The Difference campaign that funds ocean conservation efforts.
